Wolfersdorf Moated Castle
formerly Dukedom of Saxe-Altenburg, since 1919 Free State of Thuringia   Once, Wolfersdorf Moated
Castle belonged to the Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, today Thuringia. It had
been the hunting lodge to the last Duke, Ernst II (* 31 August 1871 in
Altenburg), after 1918 it became his permanent residence. Duke Ernst II
died on 22/03/1955 at Wolfersdorf Castle, close to Jena. He had been
expropriated in 1945 by the socialist regime, however kept a lifelong
right of abode, unusually.
